What it is

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the ACTH(4-10) fragment, developed in Russia, where it is registered as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent. It has no hormonal (corticotropic) activity.

Mechanism

Semax increases the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB, modulates the serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, and shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in ischaemia models. It is typically studied via intranasal delivery because of rapid brain uptake.

Research areas

  • Cognitive performance, attention and memory
  • Neuroprotection in stroke and ischaemia models
  • BDNF signalling
  • Anxiety and stress adaptation
  • Optic-nerve and neuropathy models

Safety and metabolism

Decades of clinical use in Russia with a favourable safety profile. Rapidly degraded by peptidases; short half-life.

Why this amount

10 mg is the standard research vial and the basis for the upcoming nasal-spray format.
